When my mother and my sister-in-law were separated, the two sisters took a photo, one of each sister, with the idea of identifying each other by the photo, but unfortunately the one of my sister-in-law was burned by the first couple who adopted her.”
“My mother’s photo is still there, but after decades, even if she had preserved it well, it would be hard to identify her. I can’t find my sister-in-law unless my sister-in-law’s children look like her and can be seen by my mother by chance.”
Otherwise it’s all very hard to find.
But the chances of that are almost nil.
“The sky is the limit, Xiaofei, you will find your sister-in-law one day.”
Hai Tong couldn’t help anything except to cheer Shang Xiaofei up.
The merchant family had money, power and connections, but they had searched for years for the merchant’s sister-in-law, and she, a person with no power and no connections, had even less ability to do so.
“I hope I can find my sister-in-law sooner rather than later, so that my mother and sisters can be reunited. Hai Tong, if you know of anyone who is adopted, let me know, I won’t let go of any possibility.”
Hai Tong instantly thought of her own mother.
She asked Shang Xiaofei, “How old is your sister-in-law?”

“Fifty-four, my mother and my sister-in-law haven’t seen each other in fifty years.”
After a moment of silence, Hai Tong said, “My mother would be fifty-four if she were alive, my mother was not actually born to my grandparents, she was picked up and adopted by my grandparents, my mother only gave birth to me and my sister, you’ve seen mine and my sister’s too.”
There are so many adopted people that Hai Tong would not overlap her mother with her merchant sister-in-law.
Again, Shang Xiaofei had met both sisters, her sister looked like her mother, and the fact that Shang Xiaofei hadn’t half reacted to seeing her sister would rule it out.
Shang Xiaofei was aware that both of Hai Tong’s sisters’ parents had died in a car accident fifteen years ago, and thinking that her sister-in-law wouldn’t be that short-lived, she didn’t think much of it and asked, “Hai Tong, apart from your mother, do you know anyone else who was adopted?”
“There are a lot of families in my hometown who don’t have daughters who have adopted daughters, but the ages don’t match up, does your sister-in-law look like your mother?”
“No. My mother looks like my grandfather, my sister-in-law looks like my grandmother, and the three of us siblings pick the best of our parents and grow up to look like both Dad and Mum. But, I guess there’s more or less a resemblance.”
Hai Tong said, “Then I haven’t seen a middle-aged woman who looks a bit like you. Send me a photo of your mother and your sister-in-law together some day, and I’ll keep an eye out for you.”
“Okay, I’ll send it to you later, it’s just that when the photo was taken, my sister-in-law was still a toddler, the woman has changed a lot, and now I don’t know what she looks like.”
Hai Tong: “It’s okay, send it to me, when I’m free, I’ll draw a portrait of your sister-in-law, imagine what she’ll look like when she grows up and draw it out, that way you’ll find it easily.”
Shang Xiaofei: “Hai Tong, you still know how to draw, great, why didn’t I think of this method.”
Hai Tong laughed: “That’s why you have to speak up when you’re in trouble, three stinkers are better than a wise man.”
